J.C. Penney coming to Matthews

By Melinda Johnston
Correspondent

J.C. Penney spokesman Tim Lyons says his company is planning to open a department store in Matthews' Windsor Square Shopping Center this fall.

Little Diversified Architectural Consulting has been hired as architect for the project. A representative for that firm says the renovations plans are out for bid and a contractor should be selected soon.

SC Windsor Associates, which owns Windsor Square Shopping Center, has submitted a zoning request that includes a site plan with a J. C. Penney store in the combined former Office Depot /Furniture Row outlet locations. If approved, the zoning change would bring that portion of Windsor Square in compliance with Matthews new code for shopping centers and allow a small front addition to create an enclosed entrance/lobby to the 91,000-square-foot space.

Office Depot recently moved up two store fronts to free up the space for the project.

SC Windsor Associates has also completed a new entry from U.S. 74, additional landscaping in the parking lot, and a round-about in front of the former Burlington Coat Factory. Last year they got approval for those projects from the town of Matthews, but said they wouldn't start the improvements until a lease was signed for at least 50,000 square feet of space in that part of the shopping center.
