Dream team takes home service award

By Lauren Bailey

For the seventh year in a row, the Butler Dream Team has been awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for logging more than 6,000 community service hours.

Over the years, the team has won the regional award for the Safe and Sober Campaign, the “Do the Right Thing” award sponsored by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police, and the NCHSAA “School of the Year” award.

The team has helped to initiate and organize many new Dream Teams locally and across the state. Current members are Katherine Healy, Amanda Biddle, Jake Cebula, Dale Earnhardt, Logan Garman, Sarah Love, Lindsey Robinson, Matthew Rumble and Ali Zubel.

As a team, these students provide literacy training, serve as lunch buddies for younger kids, serve as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, perform puppet shows in elementary schools and hospitals on making good decisions and where to seek help, and more. Within their high school, the students organize monthly campaigns against texting while driving, drinking, drugs, smoking and abuse.
