As of today, Union County has a Boys and Girls Club once again.
The club opens this afternoon at Monroe Middle School with 34 students from all over the Union County school district, said Moses Fox III, area director for the Union County Boys and Girls Club. The group is affiliated with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte, and offers play time and structured study year-round.
While the club targets minority and other students who don't have direct access to other after-school programs, it is open to any school-age student in the county. Organizers hope to add a second school in the eastern part of the county in August or September.
In the early 1990s, a Boys and Girls Club operated in Monroe for about 15 months.
Fox said a grand opening for the new club is planned for next week, although the date has not been finalized.
The cost is $5 a year to attend. Hours are: 2-7 p.m. school days; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. when school is not open, including the summer; and 12-6 p.m. on early-release school days.
