Shane Burton, whose eight-year NFL career included a two-season stop with the Carolina Panthers, was charged with DWI on Saturday evening after his truck allegedly slammed into a mailbox in north Charlotte.
Burton, whose actual first name is Franklin, was charged after taking a field sobriety test, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report. The incident happened about 7:15 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Sandy Avenue, off North Tryon Street near the U.S. 29/N.C. 49 Connector road with Interstate 85.
According to the report, Burton's truck hit a mailbox, causing about $1,000 damage to the resident's property and $10,000 to the truck. Burton, 38 and now retired, played defensive tackle in 2002 and 2003 with the Panthers. He also played with the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets in his career.
