Here's the basic information about ski slopes in the Southeast. Contact them directly for weather information, rate changes and discounts.

Note: Many ski centers offer discounts for Presidents Day weekend, Feb. 17 or 18 through Feb. 20. Contact the ski area for specific dates.)

NORTH CAROLINA

Appalachian Ski Mountain

Location: Off U.S. 321, near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Lay of the land: Slopes: 12. Base elevation: 3,635 feet. Vertical drop: 365 feet. Skiable acres: 28. Terrain: 25 percent beginner, 50 percent intermediate, 25 percent advanced. Outdoor ice skating.

Lifts: 2 quad chairs, 1 double chair, 2 conveyor, 1 handle-tow.

Lift tickets: (Weekdays) $36; $29 for high school and college students; $28 for 12 and younger, 60 and older; $31 for military; (Saturday/Sunday/holiday) $55; $39 for 12 and younger and 60 and older; $50 for military; (5:30-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday) $22; $19 for students; $17 for 12 and younger, 60 and older and military; (6-10 p.m. Friday/Saturday/holiday) $29; $21 for 12 and younger, 60 and older; $24 for military; $25 for students. Cataloochee Ski Area

Location: Off Interstate 40, in Maggie Valley.

Lay of the land: Slopes: 16. Base elevation: 4,660 feet. Vertical drop: 740 feet. Skiable acres: 50. Terrain: 25 percent beginner, 50 percent intermediate, 25 percent advanced.

Lifts: 1 quad chair, 1 triple chair, 1 double chair, 3 conveyors.

Lift tickets: (Weekdays) $38; $26 for ages 5-12; free for 65 and older and 4 and younger with a ticketed adult; (Saturday-Sunday/holiday) $56; $43 for ages 5-12. Holiday rates: Presidents Day weekends.

Hawksnest Tubing

Location: Off N.C. 105, south of Boone.

Lay of the land: Base elevation: 4,095 feet. 20 tubing lanes (400 to 1,000 feet long); skiing not offered.

Lifts: 2 moving-carpet conveyors.

Cost (per session): (Weekdays) $25; (Saturday-Sunday/holiday) $30. Two weekday sessions: $32. Holiday rates: Presidents weekends.

Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center

Location: On N.C. 106 (Dillard Road), southwest of Highlands.

Lay of the land: Slopes: 1. Base elevation: 3,800 feet. Vertical drop: 100 feet. No skiing; tubing and ice skating only. Lifts: 1 carpet lift.

Tubing, $24 for two-hour session; ice skating, $10 for one-hour session. Group rates available. Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Also open most holidays.

Beech Mountain Resort

Location: Off N.C. 184, north of Banner Elk.

Lay of the land: Slopes: 15. Base elevation: 4,675 feet. Vertical drop: 830 feet. Skiable acres: 95. Terrain: 30 percent beginner, 40 percent intermediate, 30 percent advanced. Snowboarding, ice skating. Two terrain parks. Lifts: 2 quad chairs (one is high-speed; one fixed-grip), 5 double chairs, 1 J-bar.

Lift tickets: (Monday-Friday) $30; half-day is $20; night ticket: $20 (Sunday-Thursday); $30 (Friday-Saturday).

Sugar Mountain Resort

Location: On N.C. 184, east of Boone.

Lifts: 1 triple chair, 4 double chairs, 2 conveyors (1 in tubing park), 1 T-bar, 1 handle-tow (in terrain park).

Holiday rates: Presidents weekend. Tubing: $25 for 1 hour 45 minute midweek session; $30 for weekend/holiday. Ice skating is $15 for 1 hour 30 minute session.
