It may cost you more to play in Pineville - especially if you are not a resident.
The Pineville Town Council approved a rate increase earlier this month for field and shelter rentals at Lake Park and Jack Hughes Park.Pineville Parks and Recreation Director Kristy Detwiler said the increases are necessary to cover the costs of operation in the parks. She recommended raising rates even more for residents, but council members refused.New council member Melissa Davis said, "I have to stick up for the people - the taxpayers - who live in Pineville. I would like to keep the residential rates the same and change the nonresidential rates as proposed."To compromise, the council voted to keep ball field rental the same for residents, except when they used the field lights. Then the fee would increase to cover electricity costs.The council also raised the rate slightly for residents to use the medium and large picnic shelters.Rates for nonresident users increased across the board. All increases are now in effect.Town Administrator Mike Rose suggested the council look at the fees in more detail at its budget workshops this spring.In other business, the council: Held a public hearing on a request to reduce side setbacks from 6 feet to 5 feet on the 50-foot lots in the Parkway Crossing subdivision. Set a public hearing for Feb. 14 on the proposed abandonment of a small section of Sam Meeks Road. Set a public hearing for Feb. 14 for a text-change request by Carolina Sportsplex LLC that would allow private recreational facilities in town.Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012
