Ann Caulkins, the Charlotte Observer's president and publisher, has been named Queens University of Charlotte's 2011 Charlotte Businesswoman of the Year.
She will be honored March 7 during a luncheon at Queens. Caulkins is the 27th winner of the award, which is based on leadership, competence, character and commitment to the community, Queens said in a news release Monday.
Past winners have included Carol Hevey of Time Warner Cable and Cathy Bessant of Bank of America Corp.
"Ann Caulkins has proven herself to be a resilient leader who is dedicated to public service," Queens President Pamela Davies said. "She is engaged in our community and has demonstrated how business and community goals are interrelated."
Caulkins started her career with Knight-Ridder Inc. in 1984 at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and later became publisher of The State newspaper in Columbia. She joined the Observer in 2006.
She serves on a number of community boards, including the Charlotte Chamber Board of Directors, Levine Museum of the New South Board of Directors, Charlotte Center City Partners Board of Directors and Knight Foundation Charlotte Advisory Committee.
