ROCK HILL New details were released Friday morning in the death investigation of a 62-year-old Rock Hill man who was assaulted at his Orr Drive home.
According to a Rock Hill police report, Alexander Hardin's neighbor, girlfriend and her daughter entered the house at 324 Orr Drive through the back door and found Hardin on the floor near the front door "with blood coming from his head."
Rock Hill Police Lt. Brad Redfearn said Hardin was assaulted with "some type of object." Police could not confirm if there were any signs of forced entry into Hardin's home.
Family members told police that Hardin had recently lost a large amount of money and had a falling out with his son, who lives with him, the report said. The family has not seen the son for several days.
Police were able to make contact with Hardin's son, Redfearn said Friday, but officials won't say if the son or any others are suspects in the killing.
Alexander Hardin, who is known as "Boot" to many, was named in a police report on Wednesday.
Larry Ellis of Fort Mill told police that early Sunday morning he was with a Boot Hardin and Hardin's residence, according to a police report.
Ellis said after he left the house at about 2:30 a.m., someone snatched a bag he was carrying and ran off. The bag contained belongings of a deceased man Ellis was taking care of, including a will, driver's license, a set of keys and several credit cards, he told police.
Ellis said he checked with Hardin the next day to see if the person had returned the bag, but Hardin said no.
When the person snatched the bag, Ellis said he chased after him, but was struck on the head by an unknown assailant, he said.
Redfearn would not comment on the details of the investigation, but said police are looking into the possibility that the two incidents are related.
"We are following up on several leads that we have received," Redfearn said.
The police have interviewed several people, will continue interviews today and complete a neighborhood canvass, he said.
Brother Michael Hardin, 57, said he last saw Alexander Hardin on Sunday when he stopped by the home, where his brother had lived for about four years.
He was a good man, Hardin said. I dont know what Im going to do without him.
Nephew Corey Hardin, 21, said he had visited his uncle a lot when he was younger, even calling him his favorite uncle.
He was funny, too, he said.
Everyone called him Boot, Corey Hardin said, a nickname his uncle had earned as a child. Corey Hardin learned of his uncle's death as he was on his way to work.
On Thursday afternoon, the road was partially blocked as detectives processed the crime scene. Caution tape surrounded the house and detectives could be seen dusting the porch for fingerprints.
Hardin's dog was outside watching, along with a large crowd of family, friends and community members.
Michael Hardin said he didnt know of anyone who would want to hurt his brother or why, but he wont stop until they find out who did it.
I hope they get whoever killed my brother, he said.
This is York County's second homicide of 2012.
