A 73-year-old woman who was struck by a car while trying to cross Milton Road on Thursday afternoon has died of her injuries, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say.

The victim was identified as Bernice Williams Whitmire. Police say she was struck shortly before 12:30 p.m., while crossing in the 3000 block of Milton Road, near Sharon Amity Road. She was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center, where she died from her injuries several hours later.

Police say the 19-year-old woman driving the 2008 Suzuki Forenza that struck Whitmire remained at the scene. She was given a traffic citation for not having a current driver's license but was not charged in connection with the pedestrian's death.

Several witnesses were interviewed at the scene, investigators say. The incident remains under investigation, police say, and witnesses are asked to call CMPD Detective Kevin Allred, at 704-336-8862.
