Scouting for food

Canned goods for Scouts

Boy scouts and cub scouts will descend on neighborhoods throughout Mecklenburg and Union counties to hand deliver grocery bags for their annual “Scouting for Food” drive to benefit Loaves & Fishes. The drop-off day is this Saturday, Jan. 28. Scouts will be returning to pick up the full bags on Saturday, Feb. 4.

There are a lot of ways to get kids involved with this project. With a set amount of money, how far can the kids get in terms of filling up the bag? What would they fill it with? Is the food nutritious and/or on the “priority” list (like canned meat and cereal)? How much can they save if they use coupons or go to a wholesale club? How much food equals a new video game or toy?

Last year, Charlotte-area Scouts pulled in more than 175,000 POUNDS of food – thanks to hundreds of little hands pitching in! Loaves & Fishes provided groceries to more than 114,000 local residents last year, and the demand continues to grow.

“Each of the last four years, the Boy Scouts have increased the amount of food they have raised for Loaves & Fishes. Without their continued efforts we could not meet the rising need for emergency food in our community. The Boy Scouts are making life better for thousands of hungry people in our community,” said Beverly Howard, Loaves & Fisher executive director.

If you don’t get a personal knock on your door this weekend with a heartfelt pitch, you can still help out. Area Harris Teeter stores are providing collection bins from Feb. 4-12, and tractor trailer trucks will be collecting food at the following locations Feb. 4-5 and 11-12:
