Iredell County authorities are looking for this man, 45-year-old Troy Lee Waters, in connection with a scam involving hot tubs. Deputies say they believe Waters lives in southern Iredell or northern Mecklenburg counties. Iredell County Sheriff's Office

STATESVILLE -- The Iredell County Sheriff's Office is asking the public's help in finding a man suspected of using worthless checks to buy hot tubs from residents.

The suspect in the case is identified by the sheriff's office as Troy Lee Waters, 45, who investigators say lives in southern Iredell or northern Mecklenburg counties.

Deputies say Waters is wanted in Iredell on charges of obtaining property by false pretense. Investigators say he also is wanted in three other states on similar charges.

According to authorities, Waters typically responds to a person who is selling a hot tub on Craigslist, showing up at their residence. He then pays them with checks from an account that is closed. Deputies say Waters operated under the business name of Lake, Land and Sea.

He is believed to be driving a 2006 silver Toyota Highlander, with N.C. license tag YYT-8074. However, he sometimes might have a South Carolina tag on the vehicle, say deputies. The vehicle also might be pulling a trailer specially designed to haul hot tubs.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call police or contact Iredell County Crime Stoppers, 704-662-1340.
