Mooresville-based Lowe's, Inc. named Dollar General CEO Rick Dreiling to its board of directors on Friday, adding a longtime consumer goods executive to the mix.

Dreiling will be the twelfth member of the board, and will serve on the governance and audit committees.

"Rick has a tremendous range of retail and executive management experience from his years of working with some of the nation's top retail companies," said Robert Niblock, Lowe's CEO, in a statement. Dreiling, 58, has formerly been CEO of Duane Reed drug stores and executive vice president of Safeway, among other positions.

Tennessee-based Dollar General is one of the main rivals to Family Dollar, headquartered in Matthews. Dreiling oversaw Dollar General as it became a public company again in 2009, after a private equity takeover.
