A 30-year-old Charlotte man linked to a 2007 rape by DNA pleaded guilty this week in Mecklenburg Superior Court.
On July 8, 2007, Lavonte Davis picked up the victim at a bus stop, saying that he'd give her a ride home, prosecutors said. But instead he drove to Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology in west Charlotte and pulled out a gun, according to prosecutors. Then, he sexually assaulted and robbed her.
Davis was later connected to the crime after his DNA was collected following an unrelated felony conviction and put into a national database. He was arrested nearly three years after the crime, records show.
On Monday, he pleaded guilty to first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sex offense, kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced to about 25-31 years in prison.
