Charlotte 49ers: A capsule look

Brandon Banks, DE, Southwest Guilford, 6-3, 245: Piedmont Triad 4A's defensive player of the year in as a senior, led team in tackles for three seasons.

Jared Barr, OL, Monroe Sun Valley, 6-3, 285: Played in Shrine Bowl, was All-Southern Carolina 4A selection for two seasons.

Justin Bolus, ATH, James Island, S.C., 6-3, 205: Another Shrine Bowler, also excelled in basketball, baseball and track at James Island.

Terry Caldwell, LB, Wilmington Hoggard, 6-0, 200: 13 tackles-for-loss as a senior, when he was Wilmington area's defensive player of year.

Jaquil Capel, QB, West Montgomery, 5-11, 175: Originally committed to Appalachian State, accounted for 113 touchdowns in high school (78 rushing, 35 passing).

Jamal Covington, OT, Hampton (Ga.) Lovejoy, 6-3, 270: All-state as a senior, helped Lovejoy to 14-1 record.

Greg Cunningham, DB, West Charlotte, 6-1, 175: Had 102 tackles last season; also a track sprinter (55 meters).

Austin Duke, WR, Independence, 5-8, 155: Shrine Bowler who caught 54 passes for 1,200 yards last season.

Kariym Gent, RB, Ayden-Grifton, 5-11, 186: Rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 13 TDs for N.C. 1A runner-up last season.

Jalen Holt, ATH, South Stanly, 6-3, 220: Was all-state last season and Yadkin Valley 1A's offensive player of the year.

Matt Johnson, QB, Maiden, 6-3, 210: Started four seasons for Blue Devils, accounted for 67 TDs as junior and senior.

Thomas La Bianca, OL, Indian Trail Porter Ridge, 6-3, 282: First-team all-conference and All-Observer selection as senior, helped team to state championship game.

Rick Legrant, LB, Buford (Ga.), 6-0, 205: Played for three state championship teams and one that advanced to '11 title game.

Lee McNeill, QB, Indian Trail Porter Ridge, 6-2, 180: Had 35-6 record as starter in three seasons, threw for nearly 6,000 yards in his career.

James Middleton, DL, St. Stephen (S.C.) Timberland, 6-4, 250: Helped team to 51-4 record in four seasons, including a state title.

Karsten Miller, QB, North Davidson, 6-3, 175: Missed senior season with broken leg, but was Central Piedmont 4A's offensive player of year in 2010.

Tank Norman, DB, Richlands, 5-11, 280: Struggled with injuries as a senior, but passed for 975 yards and eight TDs as quarterback.

Larry Ogunjobi , DT, Jamestown Ragsdale, 6-2, 267: Helped Tigers to share of Piedmont-Triad 4A title in '11, had double-digit sacks.

Kendal Parker, LB, Lake Park (Ga.) Lakeside, 6-1, 215: Has good bloodlines: brother Kyle is a former Clemson QB and dad Carl a former Cincinnati Bengals receiver.

Casey Perry, OL/DL, Durham Hillside, 6-3, 295: PAC 6 4A's lineman of the year in '11 and three-time all-conference player. A three-star recruit, according to Rivals.com.

Mark Pettit, LB, Western Guilford, 6-6, 235: The Hornets' defensive player of the year as a senior and two-time All-Greensboro Metro 4A choice.

Jamel Ross, WR, Cary Panther Creek, 6-3, 285: Had 50 catches for 459 yards and seven TDs as senior, the first year he played football. Brother, Earnest, plays basketball for Missouri.

Mason Sledge, OL/DL, Monroe, 6-4, 250: Rocky River 1A's defensive player of the year in '11, had 3.8 GPA.

Will Thomas, ATH, Hampstead Topsail, 6-0, 165: Had more than 600 total yards as QB/RB/WR last season and was state high jump champ in track (6-9).
