Clemson, USC build strong classes

By Ron Green Jr.

The recruiting beat goes on for the football programs at South Carolina and Clemson.

Both programs put together strong classes again with the Tigers putting together what ESPN rated the No. 7 class in the country while the Gamecocks were 16th in the same list. The Gamecocks signed four Parade All-Americans, including the top player in the state, receiver Shaq Roland, while the Tigers picked up 11 in-state signees.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney balanced his class with eight offensive players and 12 defensive players. Five of the eight offensive signees are already enrolled at Clemson and will be able to participate in spring practice. Overall, Clemson has eight signees already enrolled.

Tacked on to a strong class last year, Swinney said it's the first time since the Danny Ford era Clemson has put together consecutive top-10 classes.

Asked which players might make early impacts, Swinney said opportunities will abound along both lines and he said running back Zac Brooks could see playing time given the limited number of players at the position.

Swinney said it was nice to have no drama on signing day like a year ago, when the Tigers were in the hunt for No. 1 recruit JaDeveon Clowney who went to South Carolina. "I'll take this every year," Swinney said.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was pleased with his class that was ranked 12th nationally by Scout.com, building on the momentum of the program's first 11-win season.

"We have more to offer than we've ever had at South Carolina," Spurrier said. "We have a track record for winning, we have a track record for graduating our players, we play in the SEC ... and so forth."

In signing Roland, the Gamecocks secured the top-rated player in the state for the fourth straight year. Previously, Spurrier signed defensive back Stephon Gilmore, running back Marcus Lattimore and Clowney. In Roland, the Gamecocks have another dangerous wide out to follow Alshon Jeffery.

The other Parade All-Americans headed to Columbia are defensive end Darius English from Powder Springs, Ga., offensive tackle Brock Stadnik from West Guilford High in Greensboro and quarterback Brendan Nosovitch from Allentown, Pa.
