Freund has made a business by turning thrift store clothes into high fashion. On Thursday, Jan.26, 2012, Freund held an "upcycle" sewing class for women at The Light Studio in Cornelius. She helped students figure out their way around a sewing machine and cut out fabric sections for them to use. The Light Studio is a hair salon that also has a store component, and it's where Freund sells a lot of her products. She takes apart clothes and combines patterns, textures and shapes into new garments she sells under the label Jelbel at two locations in the Charlotte area. She also salvages old furniture and home goods, repurposes them, and sells them. John D. Simmons - jsimmons@charlotteobserver.com
