Police were searching Saturday for one of three teenage girls who are accused of leading authorities on a chase through busy uptown Charlotte streets Friday night before crashing near Time Warner Cable Arena and the Transportation Center.
The trio was in a car that had been stolen in a carjacking a short time earlier in southwest Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said. And, said witnesses, the driver of the car cursed at police after the chase ended on East Trade Street. No injuries were reported.
Two of the teens were taken into custody soon after the car crashed.
Police said the incident began at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, when three young women allegedly carjacked a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu at gunpoint on Farmhurst Drive, in a neighborhood off Nations Ford Road.
About 20 minutes later, an N.C. Highway Patrol trooper spotted a similar vehicle driving recklessly northbound on Interstate 77, between Clanton and Remount roads.
When the trooper tried to stop the vehicle, police said, the Chevrolet pulled away.
The driver of the car got off I-77 and eventually made her way onto uptown streets, with the state troopers in pursuit. Along the way, police said, the Malibu hit or grazed at least two other vehicles, causing minor damage.
Eventually, the driver of the Malibu got on Trade Street, which was busy with patrons headed to restaurants and clubs, and others who were arriving late for the evening performance of the circus at Time Warner Cable Arena.
It's unclear what speeds were reached during the pursuit.
Police said the driver of the Malibu swerved several times and finally crashed into a tree at Trade and Brevard streets. Then, all three girls jumped from the vehicle and tried to run, according to the Highway Patrol.
Before two of the teens were taken into custody, witnesses said, the 15-year-old driver voiced her displeasure to people nearby. Authorities said she did not have a driver's license.
The other girl's age wasn't immediately available, and their names were not released because they are juveniles.
The third girl, identified by police as 16-year-old Cherish Moise, ran off, police said. As of Saturday night, she had not been found.
Police said all three will be charged with common law robbery and theft of a vehicle.
