A Charlotte man and woman were killed and another person critically injured Friday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash in Davidson County, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
Killed in the wreck on U.S. 52 were Shavalos Jameson, 21, and Thea-Simone McDuffy, 19. Jameson's brother, Tre-Von Rutherford, 16, was injured.
Troopers say McDuffy was driving Jameson's Ford Taurus southbound on U.S. 52 about 1:10 p.m. when the car suddenly swerved into the guardrail and went off the bridge. Troopers say the Taurus fell about 50 feet, landing on Old U.S. 64 and then flipping onto an embankment.
Rutherford was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Troopers say drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash, but they are not sure why the car went off the bridge. A friend told WSOC-TV that Jameson had complained about having problems with the car's steering before leaving Charlotte earlier Friday.
