James Gale, a fifth-grader at Weddington Elementary, didn't just watch Super Bowl XLVI on TV. He was on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium.

He also got his 30 seconds of fame during halftime as Bob Costas introduced him to the NBC television audience.

Gale won a contest as the NFL Play 60 Super Kid, winning the job of presenting the official game ball to the referee on the 50-yard line before Sunday's kickoff. Thirty-three youths won at the local level, receiving prize packs with two tickets to a regular-season game in their market, but James was the sole national winner.

As part of the contest, Gale wrote an essay about nutrition, including how his diet improved after being adopted by an American family and moving here from Liberia.
