Support grows for Mooresville schools tax hike

The superintendent of the Mooresville Graded School District says some parents and business leaders say they'll support a five-cent increase in property taxes to support the school district, the Mooresville Tribune is reporting.

The school board is likely to vote next week on a proposed increase to the district's supplemental property tax. The current tax rate is 13.5 cents per $100 per assessed value.

Superintendent Mark Edwards has said a tax increase is needed to offset expected state cuts. He'd originally pitched a four-cent increase.

But the Tribune reports Edwards said he has heard support from some people interested in raising the tax by five cents in order to prevent additional cuts.

Mooresville is one of 20 school districts with taxing authorities, but one of the few that do not require county commissioners to back any changes to the supplemental tax rate.
