Woman dies from wreck injuries

By Steve Lyttle

A single-vehicle wreck last Thursday morning on Wilkinson Boulevard in west Charlotte has claimed a second life.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Darlene Margaret Chastain, 62, of Cramerton, died over the weekend at Carolinas Medical Center. She had been seriously injured in the wreck that killed a friend and neighbor, Boyd Jasper Sawyer, 70.

Friends said Sawyer had been driving Chastain to the bus station in Charlotte's uptown, so she could take a bus and visit family members.

The wreck happened about 7 a.m., with Sawyer driving a 1998 Subaru Forester inbound on Wilkinson Boulevard. Police say Sawyer was driving in the left lane, and the vehicle somehow ran into the median. The vehicle mowed across the median, hitting two trees and then overturning.

Sawyer died at the scene, and Chastain was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center.
