District Spelling Bee Winners

At the Jan. 30 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' District Spelling Bee, five CMS students received awards and honorable mentions.

First-place winner Aditi Jain (center), a fifth-grader at Elon Park Elementary, will go on to The Charlotte Observer Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 20 at ImaginOn's Wachovia Playhouse. Akshra Paimagam (second from right), a fourth-grader from McKee Road Elementary, took second place. Other competitors in the bee included Alina Madsourivong (right), a fifth-grader from Tuckaseegee Elementary; Sedarian Murphy (left), an eighth-grader from James Martin Middle, and Joie Mills (second from left), a sixth-grader at Ridge Road Middle.

Morgan Opela (not pictured), a sixth-grader at Socrates Academy Public Charter School, won the area charter school spelling bee sponsored by Scripps Spelling Bee and will continue in competition Feb. 20 with other area winners.
