A 44-year-old man is in jail today, accused of killing his parents at their home in Ellerbe.

Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons Jr. identified the victims as Edwin Arthur Richardson, and his wife, Margaret. Both were 69. He described the couple as "outstanding citizens in our community," with a family history of farming and other businesses in the area.

The couple’s son, Edwin Anthony Richardson, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, Clemmons said.

Clemmons said authorities were called to a home in the 100 block of Richardson Road where they found the victims. The Richmond County Daily Journal is reporting the couple had been shot.

It was not immediately clear Tuesday what led to the shootings. Clemmons said officials could only report currently that the senior Edwin Richardson took out a warrant for against his son last June for "assault by pointing a gun."
