Mecklenburg County Commissioner Jim Pendergraph will hold a new conference Wednesday morning to announce plans to run for the 9th District Congressional seat being vacated by fellow Republican Sue Myrick -- apparently with Myrick's blessing.

Pendergraph, a former sheriff, said Myrick told him of her plans about two Sundays ago over lunch.

"Sue and I have been friends for 25 years and she's very close," Pendergraph said this afternoon. "And I just would expect that she would (support me)."

Myrick could not be reached.

Pendergraph could be the first of several Republicans to announce for the seat in the heavily Republican district.

Other possible GOP candidates include Dan Barry, mayor pro tem of Weddington, former state Sen. Robert Pittenger of Charlotte and Charlotte City Council member Andy Dulin.

Dulin said he expects to make a decision by week's end.

"It's a position I've thought about, it's a position I would be very good at," he said.
