Union County Public Schools

Partners for afterschool: The Salvation Army and local businesses have created an afterschool program at Monroe Middle School.

The Boys and Girls Club program provides academic assistance and a safe place for students and is open to all feeder schools in the Monroe area and East Union Middle School. The fee is $5 per student per year.

Western Union Elementary

Poets published: Third Grade Poets, Peyton McDonald, Caralyn Elrod, Sukarno Brown, Brett Connell and Nikolas Kotesky from Jennifer Bittner's class, will have their poems published in the upcoming issue of "Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans."

Terrific kids: The following students at Western Union were honored as Terrific Kids and received certificates from the Kiwanis Club-Monroe: Brett Connell, Amiya Patterson, Prentis Brown, Kennedie Gaither, Lela Cook, Kaitlyn Page, Julia Reyes, Savanna Young, Savannah Helms, Jonathan Ellis, Drake Upchurch, Destiny Deese, Jade Washington, Chloe Byrum, Reagan Lurix and Savannah Wheeler.

Distinguished educator: Dr. Mary Ellis, deputy superintendent for instructional programs, has been named the 2011 N.C. Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development Distinguished Educator of the Year.

Piedmont High

Wrestling champs: Wrestlers Alex Turner and Parker von Egidy are among the 2011 N.C. State 2A wrestling champs.

Health students: Health Occupations, World History and U.S. History students recently heard Tyler Cook, a certified physician assistant, speak about his medical internship in Belize. Cook discussed medical conditions in Belize and of the immersion process for visiting medical professionals.

Carmel Christian School

Geography Bee: Overall winner is Hunter Dixon, eighth grade; and Garrett Fogg, seventh grade, in second place. Winners in grades one through four are Eva Vega, second grade, and Bond Uzomba, first grade. Grades five through eight winners are Abigayle Hannon, fifth grade, and Thomas Maye, fifth grade.

All-district band: Margaret Lynch, 10th grade, won first chair in the South Central All-District Band. Margaret will perform with the band at a Lenoir-Rhyne University concert and also is eligible to audition for the All-State Band.
