Union County

Primary elections: The filing period for primary elections in the county starts at noon on Monday and runs through noon Feb. 29. People may file at the county Board of Elections, 316B E. Windsor St., Monroe.

At the state level, Senate Districts 35 and 36 are up for election, as are House Districts 55, 68 and 69. All seats are two-year terms.

At the county level, two county commissioner seats are up for election, the posts held by Kim Rogers and Tracy Kuehler. The register of deeds job is also vacant. All three positions are four-year terms.

Another race is to fill the remaining two years in the district attorney's job. District Attorney Trey Robison was appointed by Gov. Bev Perdue in 2010 to replace John Snyder, who unexpectedly resigned from the job shortly after winning re-election.

Free training: The Porter Ridge Athletic Association, Waxhaw Athletic Association and Carolinas Medical Center-Union have teamed up to help young athletes stay injury-free while playing sports.

As part of a three-year partnership, CMC-Union will provide CPR, first-aid and injury prevention training and education for coaches, free first aid kits for coaches, an on-site automated external defibrillator, a free health fair for families, and free physicals to the more than 4,000 youth athletes in the two associations.

Election discussion: Wingate University will host Election 2012 Roundtable on Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in McGee Theatre of the Batte Center on campus.
