The Queen of Pop is coming to the Queen City.
On the heels of her buzzed-about halftime performance at Sunday's Super Bowl, Madonna has announced a 51-concert world tour that begins May 29 in Israel, lands in the U.S. on Aug. 28 and comes to Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena on Nov. 15.
It's a huge coup for the uptown venue, which is on a hot streak with 2012 bookings that include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Van Halen, Coldplay and Roger Waters. But it's an even bigger "get" for the city: The pop singer, who will be 54 when she visits, has performed in Atlanta five times over three decades but has never brought a major tour to the Carolinas.
This is her first road trip since 2008's "Sticky & Sweet" tour, and although prices for the upcoming concerts were not announced by promoter Live Nation, one can expect to have to dig deep - "Sticky & Sweet" tickets were in the $55-$350 range. That tour grossed $408 million, the biggest total for a solo artist and the third-best-selling tour of all time.
Tuesday's announcement came barely a full day after a record 114 million people tuned in to see Madonna's lavish, Cleopatra-themed show during halftime of Sunday night's Super Bowl broadcast on NBC.
Tickets for the Charlotte concert go on sale March 5 at the arena box office, www.livenation.com, Ticketmaster or by phone at 800-745-3000. Madonna also will perform at Atlanta's Philips Arena on Nov. 17. Concertgoers who buy online will receive a copy of her new album ("MDNA," due out March 26) with every ticket purchased.
What to expect: Madonna isn't known for subtlety, so Charlotte should expect elaborate costumes and complex staging on par with what Lady Gaga - who is often referred to as a modern-day Madonna - did here in 2010.
