Winter break: We missed it! Usually we enjoy 4-6 weeks of light duty on the farm, but not this season.
Jenifer started close to 2,500 transplants this week in the greenhouse, sowed 800 feet of Green Arrow peas with our German-made seeder, and cultivated 11 225-foot beds of garlic with the wheel hoe. Each bed requires four passes, so she pushed the wheel hoe for about 1.8 miles.
We hired a guy on a temporary basis this week to help Jenifer on the farm. She is kicking his butt by just doing normal chores. But he is a good guy and willing to work.
Nonprofits are interesting. At my new job, we got approval to finally buy some cover crop seed. So this week we have sown an acre and a half with crimson clover and rye for a future orchard and tilled up 2 acres for vegetable production.
Laughing Owl Farm CSA
We are cutting back to 30-35 shares this year for obvious reasons. Jenifer will be on hiatus from the Matthews market after the winter market. Our CSA shares will be available for pickup on Saturday mornings at the Charlotte market only.
We will offer current share members first choice in a CSA share, and if we have any shares available, I will post it in a newsletter in a few weeks.
