Carrington Price lives and works on a 300-acre horse farm.
This isn't just any horse farm. It's Brooklandwood, home of the Queen's Cup Steeplechase, an annual horse racing and social event that raises money for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central & Western North Carolina.
During the busy season, Price, who is the president and race co-chairman of the Charlotte Steeplechase Association/Queen's Cup Steeplechase, works with a small team to prepare for the event that attracts more than 11,000 people each year.
On a typical day, Price, who is in her 50s, can be found in casual attire. But for events, she enjoys dressing up. "Being comfortable gives me a chance to dress up, and dressing up give me a chance to be comfortable," Price says. --Lashawnda K. Becoats
Q. Who inspires your personal style?
My 22-year-old daughter. She's stylish and classically trendy.
Q. What has your daughter taught you about style?
She's helped me realize it is OK to wear something fun. I don't need to wear things that are matronly. I can still feel young and spirited in things I put on everyday.
Q. Where do you like to shop?
Cinch in Charlotte and Plain and Fancy in Pawleys Island, S.C. They carry clothes that are fun and a little zippy. I like things with a personality to it and that make a statement.
Q. What designers do you like to wear?
I buy what I like and don't really pay attention to who the designer is. I don't like to shop by name. I shop by what I like and what makes me feel good.
Q. What's your favorite color to wear?
Teal/turquoise. It's a happy color and is typically a good color for me. I love color, and I wear a lot of bright colors.
Q. What items in your closet would you never get rid of?
Turtlenecks and jeans. These are great for wearing around the farm. I like to be warm and comfortable and can dress these up or down.
Q. What's in your handbag?
Everything but the kitchen sink! Including, but not limited to, wallet, checkbook, business cards (my own, my husband's and my son's), phone, Bluetooth, earbuds, brush, notepad, pens and pencil, small mirror, and my pharmacy bag, which includes lipstick and gloss, two types of hand cream, nail file, nail clippers.
Q. What's your beauty regimen?
I am lazy about this but wish I were better. My mother wore only lipstick and face powder, so there was little role modeling. Right now I'm wearing Estee Lauder and Bobbi Brown products.
Q. What's the ideal outfit to wear to Queen's Cup?
One should always dress for the weather since we run rain or shine, but a sundress or cute skirt is perfect! Flat shoes are also a must since the races are run in open, grassy, uneven terrain.
Q. What's something you know now that you wish you'd known when you were younger?
I've gotten more into who I am and what I represent. I think it's more important to be efficient with your time and not worry so much about what other people think about your clothes or makeup. There are more important things than looking fabulous 24/7.
