10-vehicle crash closes Watauga highway

Providence and Lawyers roads are the trouble spots for motorists at 8 a.m. this morning in Charlotte.

A bigger problem has forced authorities to shut down a state highway in Watauga County.

Collisions have been reported on Providence Road at Shelton Road, and on Lawyers Road at Split Oak Drive. The Providence Road wreck is a short distance south of the Fairview Road intersection, but police are nearly finished moving the cars out of travel lanes at 8 a.m.

The Lawyers Road collision was reported about 7:45 a.m., and traffic is snarled in the area. Motorists should consider using alternate routes, such as Albemarle or Idlewild roads.

Earlier wrecks on Tuckaseegee Road and the Billy Graham Parkway were out of travel lanes at 8 a.m.

Up in Watauga County, icy roads are causing problems. The sheriff's office in Watauga County said authorities have closed N.C. 105, near the Smoke Tree Lodge, because of a collision that apparently involved 10 vehicles.

Authorities have called for state road crews to treat the highway, but motorists must find alternate routes for the time being. N.C. 105 is used by many motorists headed to Boone from Avery County.

In the Charlotte area, the weather also is good, although it's cold.

You'll need to allow extra time to defrost your windshield, because temperatures fell into the upper 20s in many places overnight. If your vehicle was parked outdoors, it probably has a frosty windshield.
