Charlotte Latin wrestling coach Richard Fletcher knew that with just one senior on the 24-man roster, his Hawks were going to have to rely on youth in the CISAA conference tournament.
The young wrestlers did not disappoint.
Two freshmen and two sophomores won individual conference championships to lead Charlotte Latin to its third straight team conference championship.
"We have a very, very young team and our freshmen wrestled really well," Fletcher said.
Charlotte Latin wrestlers made it to 11 of the 14 championship finals and won six individual titles in Thursday's tournament at Charlotte Christian.
Freshman Billy McClelland (113 pounds) took the first championship for Latin, beating Charlotte Christian freshman Charlie Rand.
In the 145-pound final, Latin junior Mat Borin came from behind and pinned Charlotte Country Day's Jack Shell with just 13 seconds remaining in the match.
Sophomore Nick Boyd (152) also won an individual title for the Hawks and Latin swept the top three weight classes with sophomore Zachary Carter (195), junior Sam Wilson (220) and freshman Toby Okwara (heavyweight) each winning.
Providence Day finished second in the tournament with sophomore Arthur Linne (106), junior Amit Naik (120), senior Matt Plaus (138) and junior Ben Greenberg (170) winning championships.
Country Day senior Will Davis (160) and junior Charles Haddock (182) won their respective weight classes as did Charlotte Christian sophomore Mark Saleh (126) and senior Daniel Goldstein (132).
Fletcher said saw plenty of places to improve before the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament Feb. 17-18 at Charlotte Country Day School.
"This is nice, but it's not the prize. The prize is next week," Fletcher said.
