Fallen tree traps woman in vehicle

Firefighters worked to free a woman who was trapped inside a vehicle by a fallen tree Saturday evening in northern Charlotte.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Rocky River Road West, not far from the intersection with Old Concord Road.

It took nearly 20 Charlotte firefighters 30 minutes to free the woman, who was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The tree pieced the windshield and tilted the car on two wheels, trapping the driver inside, Observer news partner WCNC-TV reported.

Strong winds might have contributed to the incident, authorities said.
