By Jim Morrill

Republican Dan Barry, who has been running for congress in the 8th District, today switched to the 9th.

Barry, the mayor pro tem of Weddington, became the latest Republican in the race for U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick's seat. Myrick announced last week that she'll step down after nine terms.

"I want to take my experience here in Union County to Washington to represent North Carolina," he told supporters in Weddington early this morning. "It is up to us here in the 9th District to reverse the radical job-killing policies of the Obama administration so that we can fuel the engine of economic growth and return North Carolina businesses to a position where they are profitable and prosperous."

Today is the first day of candidate filing.
