Shaw rolls against Smith

RALEIGH Tony Smith had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for No. 12 Shaw in a 94-74 victory against Johnson C. Smith on Monday night.

Shaw (21-2, 13-0) clinched the CIAA Southern Division's top seed for the league tournament.

The Bears led 41-33 at halftime and built the advantage to 29 points in the second half.

Malik Alvin and Karron Johnson scored 20 points each for Shaw, and Junius Chaney added 17. Phillip Wood led the Golden Bulls (10-13, 5-8) with 15 points. Trevin Parks scored 14 and Delonta Boyd had 11.

No. 2 Syracuse 52, No. 19 Louisville 51: C.J. Fair had 13 points and Syracuse scored the final six points at Louisville, snapping the Orange's seven-game losing streak to the Cardinals.

Syracuse (26-1, 13-1 Big East) used an 8-0 run to take an eight-point lead, only to see Louisville (20-6, 8-5) rally with a 15-2 run. Syracuse held the Cardinals without a point over the final 31/2 minutes and Fair hit the go-ahead layup with 2 minutes, 11 seconds left.

Fab Melo scored 11 points and the best shooting team in the Big East overcame a 34.4 percent effort, including 1-for-15 from 3-point range, to win for the sixth straight time since losing at Notre Dame.

Freshman Chane Behanan had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Cardinals, who had won six straight conference games.

It was a whiteout at the KFC Yum! Center with 22,738 fans wearing white and coach Rick Pitino donning his cream-colored suit.

No. 4 Kansas 59, Kansas State 53: Tyshawn Taylor had 20 points in a virtuoso performance for Kansas, which fended off a stiff test at Kansas State for a victory that put the Jayhawks (21-5, 11-2) alone in first place in the Big 12. Jeff Withey added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Kansas moved a half game ahead of No. 3 Missouri (23-2, 10-2), which will play Oklahoma State on Wednesday night, in the race for the regular-season conference championship.

Jamar Samuels had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats (17-8, 6-7).

No. 9 Baylor 79, Iowa State 64: Perry Jones III rediscovered his shooting touch with 18 points and Baylor rebounded from consecutive losses with a home win.

Jones already had 10 points by halftime, one more than he had combined last week when Baylor (22-4, 9-4 Big 12) lost to Kansas and Missouri for the second time in four weeks.

Freshman Quincy Miller, who matched Jones with 8-of-13 shooting, added 16 points for the Bears.

Melvin Ejim had 17 points to lead Iowa State (18-8, 8-5).
