Beth Erb, Charlotte Country Day girls' basketball: Scored her 1,000th point in the second quarter of Tuesday's 54-34 win against Cannon. She also broke the school season scoring record (456) set by Sara Nichols in 1992. Erb, who has 458 points, finished with 27 in the win. UP

Sindarius Thornwell, Lancaster (S.C.) boys' basketball: S.C. 4A Player of the Year. Averages 24.8 points and 6.8 assists. UP

Holli Chandler, North Stanly girls' basketball: Scored her 1,000th career point in Monday's 83-12 Rocky River 2A tournament win against Union Academy. North Stanly will play Cuthbertson at Forest Hills in today's 6 p.m. semifinals. UP

Rajsha Blackmon, Kennedy Charter girls' basketball: Scored her 1,000th career point against Durham Kestral Heights last week. She is the Observer-area's leading scorer at more than 30 points per game. UP

Olympic boys' basketball: Jumped into USA Today's national ranking at No. 25 this week. Olympic, No. 1 in the Observer's Sweet 16, will play at Berry tonight at 6 p.m. in the ME-GA 7 3A/4A semifinals.UP

Rayshaun Bostick, Robinson boys' basketball: Had 16 points, 12 rebounds in 59-57 win against A.L. Brown.

Destiny Burton, Mallard Creek girls' basketball: 13 points, seven rebounds in 45-30 win against Lake Norman in the first round of the I-Meck 4A tournament.

Ray Chen, Gaston Day boys' basketball: 29 points, nine assists, eight rebounds in 93-74 win against Statesville Christian. Sophomore Keyshawn Woods had 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Onya Edwards, Charlotte Catholic girls' basketball: Observer All-ME-GA 7 3A/4A pick had 18 points, eight rebounds in first-round conference tournament win against Olympic.

Hannah Griffin, Hickory Grove girls' basketball: 16 points, 15 rebounds, four steals in 68-20 win against Gaston Christian. Teammate Amanda Dobner finished with 19 points, 17 rebounds and three steals.

Brianna Hamrick, Harding girls' basketball: 20 points, 12 rebounds in 74-37 win against Garinger in first round of the ME-GA 7 3A/4A tournament. Harding's Alexius Hampton had 22 points, six assists, five steals and three rebounds.

Anika Jones, Shelby girls' basketball: 22 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, three assists in 54-16 win against Chase.

Shelton Mitchell, Cuthbertson boys' basketball: Scored his 1,000th career point in 76-44 win against North Stanly. Finished with 15 points, seven assists and four steals.

Tyrell Nelson, Metrolina Christian boys' basketball: 15 points, 11 rebounds, three assists in 54-45 win against Gaston Christian.

Symphonie Richardson, Butler girls' basketball: Observer All-Southwestern 4A performer had 21 points and 16 rebounds in 56-40 win against Providence in the first round of the league tournament. Teammate Jaymee Fisher-Davis had 22 points, four steals and three assists.

Brandi Segars, Rocky River girls' basketball: 17 points, six rebounds, three steals in 49-45 win against Independence. Laquisha Taylor had 24 for the Patriots.

Clark, Gladden, White have big nights as Kennedy Charter romps

Kennedy Charter won its eighth straight game, beating Grace Academy 90-68. Kennedy Charter (19-2) jumped to a 30-point lead when coach Ed Addie cleared the bench. Point guard Jalen White scored his 1,000th career point and got his 500th assist in the game.

White finished with 11 points and 10 assists. Sophomore B.J. Gladden had 20 points and 10 rebounds and junior guard Donte' Clark had 23 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Providence Day girls wrap up CISAA championship

Providence Day's girls whipped Charlotte Christian 63-39 to wrap up the CISAA championship. Providence Day (24-4), No. 2 in the Sweet 16, won its seventh straight game behind Tiffany Mitchell (20 points, four steals) and Jatarie White (14 points, nine rebounds).

No. 1 Myers Park girls roll in first-round tournament game

Myers Park (25-0), ranked No. 1 in the Observer's Sweet 16 girls poll, beat South Meck 73-20 in the first round of the Southwestern 4A tournament.

The Mustangs led 27-3 after the first quarter and 49-3 at halftime.

Kaitlin Cash had nine points and five rebounds for the Sabres.

Northside Christian routs Westminster Catawba

Northside Christian got five double-figure scorers in an easy 105-33 win against Westminster Catawba.

Several players had big games for Northside (25-1): Dionte Adams (12 points, 12 rebounds), Brandon Alson (18 points, five rebounds); L.C. Cooks (20 points, eight assists, five rebounds); James Logan (18 points, five rebounds, four assists), and Luke Morrison (10 points, 10 rebounds).

Maiden hires former Clemson assistant as football coach

Former Clemson offensive line coach Buddy King was named Maiden High's football coach.

King coached on Danny Ford's 1981 national championship Clemson team and also had jobs at Arkansas, Louisiana State, South Carolina, Wake Forest and Wofford.

Most recently, King was an offensive line coach at Goose Creek (S.C.) High.

King replaces Brian Brown, who resigned last year. Brown coached Maiden for four years
