The winner: My laundry room is in the basement. I bought a used baby monitor at a yard sale and plugged it in next to my washer and dryer with the receiver in my kitchen. This saved me many trips down stairs to see if the machines are done. I know immediately and can fold clothes before wrinkles become permanent. Mary Lib Bird, Kings Mountain
Duct tape fixes vacuum
My vacuum cleaner started pulling air through the hose, losing its sucking power. Instead of spending $65 on a new hose I wrapped the old one with duct tape ... now it works just like new.

Clever mea culpa
A reader tip last week suggested returning your Observers to their plastic bags and dating them (in case you need to find something) before dropping them in your recycling bin. As a few sharp readers pointed out, those bags cannot be recycled under most curbside plans. The bags can be dropped off for recycling at Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods stores.
