BIRD_COUNT

At last year's Great Backyard Bird Count, ornithologist Rob Bierregaard, left, led a bird-spotting tour at the Charlotte Nature Museum. Charlotte ranked second among cities in submitting the most checklists in 2011. Todd Sumlin - tsumlin@charlotteobserver.com

The annual Great Backyard Bird Count, which recruits birdwatchers to report what they see in the name of science, begins today.

Participants count birds anywhere they wish for at least 15 minutes on one or more days between now and Monday. They enter their tallies online at www.birdsource.org/gbbc/.

The results help scientists assess bird populations and migrations. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada coordinate the count.

Charlotte ranked second among cities in submitting the most checklists in 2011. North Carolina ranked fourth among the states, reporting 180 bird species. The most common sighting, no surprise, was of the state bird: the northern cardinal.
