Authorities say a 23-year-old was fatally shot as he tried to rob a man in Salisbury.
Salisbury police say they were called to a home in the 800 block of North Lee Street around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
A man who lived at the home told police he was talking to a visitor when the would-be robber opened the front door of the residence and came inside, according to a news release. The suspect, who police identified as Marlon Jermaine Barber, then allegedly pointed a gun at the resident and demanded money.
Authorities said the men began fighting and Barbers gun fell during the struggle. The home's resident grabbed the gun, police said, but Barber then reportedly jumped on the man's back. During the second struggle, police said the resident turned the gun and shot Barber in the chest.
Police said Barber fled the scene and ran to a nearby house where he collapsed. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Police said the man who lived at the North Lee Street home was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center for treatment. He sustained facial injuries during the fight, police said.
The shooting remains under investigation with authorities trying to determine, among other things, whether Barber and the victim knew each other and if anyone else was involved in the case.
