Car with toddler in backseat stolen in Pineville

By Dianne Gallagher

PINEVILLE - A mother who went in for take-out food got the scare of her life when her car was stolen with her two-year-old in the backseat.

Sherrelle Morris tells NewsChannel 36, she was picking up the take-out food and left her son in the car.

"I saw the lights on my car moving, that's when I ran outside behind my car just yelling screaming and crying," she said, recalling the terrifying moment.

Immediately she called 911, and officers spotted her Black Mercury Cougar in the Carolina Place Mall parking lot. The toddler was still inside and he was unharmed.

"It was hard not knowing where my son was; all I could think about was my son," said Morris.

The suspects were long gone. NewsChannel 36 cameras captured video as a Pineville Police K-9 unit led officers to the front doors of the Macy's department store.

In all the commotion, Morris didn't get a good look at the men who took her car with her child inside.

Morris said, "they were Hispanic, tall, skinny ... I really don't care about them because I got my son back, so I don't care about that."

She tells NewsChannel 36 she learned a lesson the hard way, and she'll never leave her car running with her toddler in the back seat again.

Police are still searching for the suspects, and haven't made a decision if Morris will be charged for leaving her child in the car.
