Wingate University briefs

Batte Center

Concert: The Wingate University Wind Ensemble will present "Rhythms of the Dance" 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at.

The free concert will feature works based on dance rhythms and folk dances from around the world. The Wind Ensemble also is honored to feature a guest conductor, 45-year teaching veteran, Jim Hill. Hill retired as a band director from Union County Public Schools in 2011 and will be conducting a special performance of "Incantation and Dance."

Shakespeare competition: The annual Shakespeare competition will be 11 a.m.-2:15 p.m. Feb. 28.

In association with the English-Speaking Union of the United States, more than 300 middle and high school students from surrounding schools compete in the contest each year. For the preliminary round, students recite a sonnet and a portion of a Shakespeare play before a faculty/staff judge and a student judge.

Winners in the preliminary round then go on to compete in the final round of the contest at the Batte Center.
