This issue has me thinking about home.

What do you consider home? Is it your house, your neighborhood, your city or state? Not only is this our annual “Home & Garden” issue, full of projects and themes that will get you excited about the spring in terms of your physical home, but it also shows off some of Charlotte’s achievements. Although I grew up close to Charlotte, I’m a newer resident of the city proper. It doesn’t take long, however, to develop pride for this city.

With the recent Golden Globe success of the Showtime hit “Homeland,” filmed in Charlotte, people should be reminded just how huge it is that we’re playing host to this caliber of project. This month also brings the opening of “The Hunger Games,” filmed in and near Charlotte last fall. I'm an avid fan of the books by Suzanne Collins (anyone who thinks these books are just for young adults has not yet met the fearless protagonist Katniss Everdeen). Imagining those scenes coming to life in our backyard has me on the edge of my seat. We've gotten a closer look at why Charlotte and North Carolina were chosen for the project and why film companies will be returning.

If you’re considering taking the plunge with a remodeling project this season, you should definitely check out our step-by-step kitchen remodel. When you invest time, money and effort into a grand-scale project, you want to get a hefty return. We’ve walked through the decisions that can help you get a lot of bang for your buck.

On the greener side, literally, we've explored the Charlotte Camellia Society’s pride and joy – seen on the cover – as they celebrate their 30th anniversary. Their annual show takes place March 10-11. We’ve also gotten advice from Harvest Moon Grille on why stocking your kitchen from your garden (and the city’s gardens and farms) benefits us all. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can still reap the goodness of eating farm fresh.

Take pride in your home – whether that means your front lawn, your kitchen or your zip code – and celebrate it this spring.
