W. Charlotte tops North Meck

One of Mecklenburg County's oldest rivalries will renew Friday with big stakes.

West Charlotte, No. 2 in the Sweet 16, beat No. 7 North Mecklenburg for the third time this season, winning 54-49. The win sent the reigning N.C. 4A champions to Friday's sectional final at South Mecklenburg. The Sabres, No. 4 in the Sweet 16, beat Mallard Creek 50-45.

Also Wednesday, Sweet 16 No. 1 Olympic overcame a slow start to beat East Gaston 69-54. Catholic's boys advanced to the sectional finals with a 77-74 win over Anson Senior. Harding's boys, No. 3 in the Sweet 16, fell in double-overtime at North Forsyth.

In girls play, No. 1 Myers Park beat Hough 70-43, Butler upset I-Meck 4A champ Hopewell 48-46 and Ardrey Kell beat McDowell 53-37. In 3A play, Berry beat Parkwood in two overtimes.
