The UNC-Charlotte womens basketball team visited Albemarle Road Elementary this month to talk to students about the importance of education and teamwork. Third-grade teacher Anna Glodowski arranged the visit, and said she wanted the kids to see positive role models and to realize that even if you are good at sports, you also have to work hard academically to attend college on scholarship. Her class will visit UNCC in April to continue talking about college.
Jennifer Hailey (pictured), a 6-foot-3 center, was assigned to speak in Glodowskis class. You have to be good at basketball, and have good grades and a good attitude, she told the kids. We are all on full scholarships because of these things.
Each of the 10 players went to a different third-grade classroom, where they read to the children and answered questions about college and basketball. Afterward, the entire grade came to the gym with the players, who showed them different drills and invited children to participate.
The kids told players about their classes academic achievements. The players asked students about their favorite subjects and shared their own stories of favorite classes. Each student also got a signed team photo.
I felt like this was a good opportunity to meet someone from college and I felt really special because not all the kids got to meet the players, said third-grader Sariah Meliyah.
