Barons still can't solve Checkers

By Jack Horan
Correspondent

The Charlotte Checkers continued their mastery over the best team in the American Hockey League with a 6-2 win Friday night over the Oklahoma City Barons at Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Checkers deployed a stifling defense and an aggressive offense, peppering two Oklahoma City goalies with 42 shots on their way to their fifth win in seven games over the Barons. Checkers left wing A.J. Jenks scored two goals, his best output since joining the team from San Antonio last month.

The Barons didn't score their first goal until the early part of the third period as Checkers rookie goalie John Muse recorded his 10th win before an announced crowd of 12,124.

Muse credited Checkers defenders for blocking shots and clearing rebounds.

"They kept the shots outside," he said.

Five of the Checkers' six previous games with the Barons were settled by one goal and coach Jeff Daniels said he expects a tight rematch tonight at 7 p.m.

Jenks led off the scoring in the first period on a wrap-around when he slid the puck under the feet of starting Barons goalie David LeNeveu, who has the second-best goals-against average in the AHL. Forward Sean Dolan gave the Checkers a 2-0 lead.

In the second period, center Zach Boychuk picked up an outlet pass from defenseman Brett Bellemore and found teammate Brett Sutter breaking down left wing. He passed the puck to Sutter, who lobbed it into the net for his eighth goal of the season.

Jenks got his second on a power play when defenseman Joe Sova launched a puck from inside the blue line. Jenks deflected the rising puck downward with his stick and into the net for a 4-0 lead.

"I was just trying to take the goalie's eyes away," Jenks said.

Barons coach Todd Nelson pulled LeNeveu and sent in Oliver Roy, just called up from Stockton of the ECHL. Fifty five seconds later Roy gave up the game's fifth goal when left wing Chris Terry whistled in a shot from deep in the offensive zone.

Checkers left wing Justin Shugg added the sixth goal on a lone breakaway, dribbling the puck over Roy's glove for his fourth of the season.
