2012 ACC football schedule: Highlights & lowlights

Clemson, ACC champions a season ago, will get another shot in the national spotlight on Sept. 1 in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta against Auburn

The ACC is giving Clemson a mulligan.

The final image from the 2011 ACC football season was the Tigers' wrong-side-of-the-record-book 70-33 loss to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl.

The Tigers, ACC champions a season ago, will get another shot in the national spotlight on Sept. 1 in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta against Auburn. N.C. State and Tennessee, on Aug. 31, will serve as the undercard to the all-Tiger match in Atlanta.

After a delay, in part caused by West Virginia's exit from the Big East, the ACC released the football schedules for its 12 teams on Monday.

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff, in its fifth year, has not been kind to the ACC. Clemson, Virginia Tech and North Carolina have lost in the national showcase, the unofficial start of the college season.

The Tar Heels will ease into the Larry Fedora Era with a home game against Elon on Sept. 1. Duke and Wake Forest will also begin the season at home that Saturday.

The highlights, and lowlights, of what could be the last ACC schedule to feature 12 teams:

N.C. State and North Carolina still will play every year in football. The ACC hasn't changed that (yet). The Wolfpack will travel to Chapel Hill on Oct. 27.

Florida State will likely open the season in the top 10 nationally and as the conference favorite, but little will be discerned about how good the Seminoles are in the first two weeks of the season.

Jimbo Fisher's third team will play its first two games against Murray State (Sept. 1) and Savannah State (Sept. 8).

FSU can't be blamed entirely for the feeble schedule; the Seminoles were supposed to play West Virginia on Sept. 8 but ended up with Savannah State, which went 1-10 last year, when the Mountaineers left the Big East for the Big 12 and needed to drop a nonconference game.

Duke will host N.C. Central on Sept. 8 in a win-win for Durham. Also, for the first time in three years, the Blue Devils avoid a Heisman Trophy favorite in their games outside the ACC.
