Marvin-area parents meet on schools

A group of western Union County parents will meet with state legislators tonight to discuss recent and proposed future cuts in state spending on education.

The Marvin Ridge Cluster Schools Town Hall Meeting is planned for 6:30 p.m. at Marvin Ridge High School’s auditorium. The school is at 2825 Crane Road in Marvin. Schools involved are Marvin, Rea View and Sandy Ridge elementary schools; Marvin Ridge Middle; and Marvin Ridge High.

Organizers say they expect at least three state legislators to be on hand -- state Sen. Tommy Tucker, R-Union; state Rep. D. Craig Horn, R-Union; and state Rep. Linda Johnson, R-Cabarrus. Johnson is chair of the House Education Committee.

The meeting’s organizers say they want to discuss budget cuts over the past four years, and how it has affected the schools. Another $10 million in cuts are projected for the coming fiscal year, they say.

The meeting will include a chance for parents to voice concerns, followed by a response by state legislators. There also will be a question-and-answer session.
