Cannon School first-grader Helen Craft of Concord celebrated her birthday last month in an unusual way.
To honor the memory of her dog, Yogi, she asked her friends and family not to bring presents to her party, but to bring cat or dog food to be donated to the Rowan County Humane Society.
She collected 250 pounds of food, plus toys and treats. The Rowan County Humane Society awarded Helen the Susan J. Gloeckler Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to animal welfare.
