Sandy Martin and her Providence swim team expect to win championships.
This year, the veteran Panthers coach, who is also the Observer boys and Mecklenburg Coach of the Year, added her 15th state title (10 girls, five boys) to the trophy case, as the Providence boys team claimed its third title in a row.
Seniors Kevin Glenn, Austin Snyder and Ryan Wilkinson, along with junior standout Kyle Darmody, led the way and the quartet has lost only once in their high school careers (at the 2009 state championships).
Providence beat a talented Hough boys team that finished as state runner-up in the programs second year.
Houghs leader and captain, senior Peter Brumm, led his team to a a state championship in the 200 freestyle and served as the anchor of the 400-freestyle relay. Brumm, who has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in four events and will swim at University of Michigan next year, is co-Observer Swimmer of the Year.
Brumms SwimMAC Carolinas teammate and everyday practice partner, Lake Norman Highs Logan Heck, is also co-Observer Swimmer of the Year. Heck, a University of North Carolina signee, won both the 50- and 100-freestyle state titles.
Marvin Ridge swimming coach Laurie Lester is the All Region Coach of the Year for both boys and girls after leading her Mavericks girls to 3A West Regional and state runner-up finishes, with the boys coming in second at regionals and third at 3A states.
Providence wasnt the only dominant team Coach Brian Gross and his Charlotte Catholic girls team won its 11th state title in a row.
The Cougars also did it in easy fashion, taking eight of the 12 events and beating their closest competition (second-place Marvin Ridge) by 200 points.
Catholic sophomore Lauren Rhodes, the Observer and Mecklenburg Swimmer of the Year, led the way. She won state championships in both her individual events, the 100- and 200-freestyle races (with state records in both events), and the 200- and 400-freestyle relays, earning 3A state meet most valuable player honors.
The Hough girls started a tradition, winning their first 4A state title (in schools second year) with Coach Tim Queen, the Observer and Mecklenburg Coach of the Year, leading his squad to a dominant win, beating the field by 124 points.
The Cannon School sophomore Maija Roses, All Region Swimmer of the Year, also won two individual state champions in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 breaststroke. Roses has qualified for U.S. Olympic Trials in several events.
