Hospital markups: The high cost of drugs

The Observer reviewed bills from area hospitals, and found large mark-ups on drugs and procedures. Here are examples from a bill that August May received after having a baby at Presbyterian Matthews in 2010.


Hospital officials say they must mark up prices on drugs to cover costs such as shipping, packaging and quality control.
