The Community School of Davidson fifth graders recently wrote and performed an opera. After reading the book “Ashes of Roses” in social studies, about the American Industrial Revolution, they decided to write an opera based on the book.
With guidance from teachers, the students wrote the lyrics and script, composed the music and staged the opera, with a total of 16 showings for family and friends.
For the last five years, CSD has been associated with Opera Carolina through its “Music, Word, Opera” program. This was the first year that the production was independent from Opera Carolina’s help and funding.
